Two Building Waves, Two Kinds of Panel Problems

East Brunswick was mostly farms until the New Jersey Turnpike came through in the early 1950s. Then it grew fast, and it kept growing. Census estimates show about 44 percent of the township’s homes were built before 1970 and about 46 percent between 1970 and 1999. That gives us two very different kinds of houses to work on, often a few streets apart.
The first wave, the ranches, Cape Cods and split-levels of the 1950s and 1960s, mostly started with 60-amp or 100-amp service. Plenty still have their original panel, and some still have fuses. Those homes now carry central air, a modern kitchen and a finished basement on equipment that was sized for a much simpler life.
The second wave, the bigger colonials built from the 1970s through the 1990s, usually came with more power, but their panels are filling up. About 2,500 electric vehicles were registered in East Brunswick by mid-2025, based on state data, and a Level 2 charger is often the project that finally runs a full panel out of space. Planning a charger too? Our East Brunswick EV charger installation page explains how we check the panel first.
What Turns Up in East Brunswick Panels
Original Fuse Boxes
A fuse box from the 1950s is not built for today’s loads, and it can make insurance harder to get. We swap it for a breaker panel in a day. See fuse box replacement.
Federal Pacific and Zinsco
Both brands were common in houses from the township’s postwar boom. Their breakers may not trip when they should, so we replace the whole panel. See our Federal Pacific and Zinsco panel page.
Aluminum Wiring
Homes built around the mid-1960s to the early 1970s may have aluminum wiring on some circuits. We check for it during the upgrade and make the connections safe.
100-Amp Service
Still common in first-wave homes. A move to 200 amps leaves room for central air, an electric range and a car charger together.
Out of Room
In 1980s and 1990s homes the usual problem is no open slots. A second panel or a larger one fixes it.
Older Wiring Hidden in Walls
In the township’s oldest houses, near the historic Old Bridge village, we check for knob and tube wiring before tying in new circuits.

Permits and Utility Rules in East Brunswick

Before any panel or service upgrade, the township construction office has to issue a permit, and the finished job has to pass inspection. We submit the paperwork, book the inspector and handle any questions on the day.
East Brunswick is one of the few towns we serve that is split between two power companies, PSE&G and JCP&L. Your electric bill tells you which one you have, and the steps differ. With PSE&G, a new meter goes in only after the township inspection passes and the approval, known as the cut-in card, reaches PSE&G. With JCP&L, the township sends confirmation of the passed inspection and JCP&L then reconnects the house. We know both routines and plan the day around yours.
The inspector requires surge protection on a new panel, so every panel job we do includes whole-home surge protection in the price. Some service upgrades also add an outdoor emergency shut-off, a marked switch on the outside of the house so firefighters can shut the power off without going inside.
How Your Upgrade Works
- Text a panel photo to (732) 585-6560. We can often spot a fuse box, a Federal Pacific label or a full panel right away.
- On-site check. We open the panel, test it and add up what your family uses now and what you want to add.
- A flat number. You get one price that includes the permit, the surge protection and the inspection. Our panel upgrade cost guide explains the range.
- One-day install for most homes, with each breaker labeled and power on before we leave.
- Inspection and power company. We meet the inspector and handle the PSE&G or JCP&L step.

East Brunswick Panel Upgrade Questions
How much does a panel upgrade cost in East Brunswick?
Most come in between $2,000 and $7,000. Replacing a fuse box or a Federal Pacific panel with a new 200-amp setup, including a new meter box, sits toward the top. We give you the exact price in writing after opening the panel.
Is my East Brunswick home on PSE&G or JCP&L?
The township is split between the two. Check the name on your electric bill. We work with both and plan the meter or reconnect step around whichever serves your street.
I have a fuse box. Is that dangerous?
Not on its own, but old fuse boxes were not built for modern loads, and oversized fuses are a real fire risk. Many insurers also ask about them. Replacing it with a breaker panel is usually a one-day job.
Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade in East Brunswick?
Yes, from the township construction office, plus a final inspection. We file it and meet the inspector.
My 1980s colonial has 200 amps. Why is the panel full?
Every finished basement, AC zone and appliance circuit added over the years took a slot. A second panel often solves it without replacing the service.
Is surge protection part of the job?
Yes. The inspector requires it on new panels, so we include whole-home surge protection in every panel price.
