Nest Doorbell Installation: What Your Wiring Has to Do First
A wired Nest doorbell is a straightforward job when the wiring behind it is right, and a frustrating one when it is not. Nearly every problem we get called out for is the transformer, not the doorbell. Here is what to check before you buy one, and what the install actually involves.
Wired or battery — decide this first
The battery version needs no wiring at all. You take it off the wall and charge it every month or two, which some people never think about again and others find genuinely annoying. It also wakes more slowly, because it is asleep between events.
The wired version is always on, responds faster, and never needs charging. It needs two low-voltage wires at the door and a transformer with enough capacity behind them. If you have an existing doorbell that rings, you already have the wires — the question is the transformer.
The transformer is where this goes wrong
An old mechanical doorbell draws almost nothing. A video doorbell is a camera, a microphone, a speaker and a wifi radio running continuously. Google’s wired doorbell wants a 16 to 24 volt transformer at around 30 volt-amps.
Plenty of older Central New Jersey houses have a 10 or 16 volt unit that was fine for a chime for forty years and is not fine for a camera. The symptoms are specific and maddening:
- It works, then drops off wifi, then comes back.
- Live view takes forever to load or times out.
- It reports low power, or keeps restarting.
- The chime buzzes constantly.
People chase their router for weeks over this. The router is usually fine. Replacing an undersized transformer is a small job once you find it — and finding it is most of the work. They live near the panel, in a basement ceiling, above a closet, sometimes screwed to the side of the furnace.
The chime connector
Google’s wired doorbell needs to be wired with the supplied connector at the chime, or with the chime bypassed entirely, depending on your setup. Getting this wrong is the second most common fault we see — the doorbell works but the chime buzzes, or the transformer overheats.
Mechanical chimes with the two metal bars generally work fine. Digital chimes are hit and miss and often need bypassing. Older built-in intercom systems usually cannot be used at all, and the answer there is to bypass the chime and use an indoor speaker instead.
If there is no doorbell wiring at all
Then it is either the battery version, or we run new low-voltage wiring to the door and fit a transformer. Doorbell wiring is low voltage, so this is a smaller job than running a new circuit — it is mostly about the route from the transformer to the door, and whether we can get there without opening a wall.
Where it goes on the wall
Worth thinking about before it is screwed down:
- Roughly four feet off the ground is right for faces rather than chests.
- If the door is at an angle to the path, an angled wedge mount is the difference between watching your visitor and watching the neighbor’s hedge.
- Direct afternoon sun washes out the image and cooks the unit.
- Seal the screw holes. Water tracking in behind the mount is a slow, expensive problem in a wall.
The mistakes we get called to fix
- Wired straight to the transformer with the chime bypassed and no connector fitted, which can burn the transformer out.
- Mounted flat on a wall that faces the wrong way.
- Screwed into siding with no sealant.
- Blamed for a wifi problem when the router is at the back of the house and the door is at the front.

If your chime buzzes after the install, or the doorbell keeps rebooting, the connector is either missing, wired to the wrong terminals, or the chime is a type that needs a different approach. It is a five minute fix when you know what you are looking at.
Where should a video doorbell be mounted?
About 48 inches above the threshold, angled so the camera sees a person’s face rather than their chest or the sky. Direct sun on the lens washes out the image and can overheat the unit, so an east or west facing door often needs a wedge. We also check what is behind the mounting point, because siding, brick and stone each need different fixings.
