The questions we get asked most often, answered plainly. If yours is not here, call us — we would rather explain it than have you guess. You can also read more about Spartan Home Pros.
Pricing and Scheduling
Do you charge for the service call?
Yes. During normal business hours the service call is $189.99. It covers checking that power is reaching your home the right way, up to and through your breaker panel. If the problem is past the panel, troubleshooting is added, from $239.99 for one spot to $719.99 for several problems at once. Repairs are priced on their own, like $89.99 for a standard outlet, switch or breaker. After-hours emergency calls are $389.99. We waive the service call when you approve a job over $1,000, and you approve every price before work begins.
Do you give quotes over the phone?
For straightforward installs we can give you a ballpark. For anything involving your existing wiring or panel, we need eyes on it — a phone quote on that kind of work is a guess, and guesses turn into change orders.
How fast can you get here?
Same-day and emergency slots are available for live hazards. Standard installs are typically scheduled within a few days depending on the season and permit timing.
“…Mariano answered the phone in the middle of the night and provided so much information, calmly walking me through the process and assuring me the guys would be at my house first thing in the morning. He had such a calm and reassuring disposition that I valued so much during the stressful period. Just like he promised, the team showed up at 9a and immediately got to work and they had fixed everything before noon, including getting the town inspection organized. …”
Panels and Power
My breaker keeps tripping. Is that dangerous?
A breaker tripping is the breaker doing its job. What matters is why. Repeated trips on the same circuit point to an overload, a short, or a power leak, and the last two need to be found, not reset. Keep resetting it and you are ignoring a warning, not fixing a problem.
How do I know if I need a panel upgrade?
Common signs: a fuse box instead of breakers, a 60- or 100-amp service in a house that now runs central air and an EV, no room left for new circuits, or a panel brand with a known safety history such as Federal Pacific or Zinsco. We can tell you in one visit.
Do I need a permit?
Panel and service upgrades, new circuits, and EV charger installs generally require a permit and inspection in New Jersey. We pull the permit and make the process easy. We encourage an inspection on any major work — it’s how you know the job is done right to code, and we’re never shy about that. Be cautious of any contractor who doesn’t want to pull a permit.
EV Chargers and Generators
Can my panel handle a Level 2 EV charger?
Sometimes yes, sometimes it needs a service upgrade first. It depends on your existing service size and what else is on it. We run a load calculation rather than eyeballing it.
Which EV chargers do you install?
We install hardwired and plug-in Level 2 chargers from the major manufacturers, including the unit that came with your vehicle. If you have not bought one yet, we will tell you what will actually work with your panel.
Standby generator or portable?
A standby unit starts automatically and runs the circuits you choose; a portable with an interlock or transfer switch is cheaper but you are outside starting it in the storm. We install both and will walk you through the tradeoff honestly.

Should I fix it myself or call an electrician?
Changing a bulb, resetting a breaker or a GFCI, and swapping a cover plate are fine to do yourself. Call a licensed electrician for anything inside your panel, new wiring or outlets, anything that sparks, smells like burning or feels warm, and any breaker that keeps tripping. Most work beyond simple swaps also needs a town permit in NJ.

What should I ask an electrician before hiring?
Ask: Are you licensed and insured in NJ? Do you charge flat prices or by the hour? Will I get a written quote before work starts? Do you pull permits? Do you guarantee your work? Good companies answer all five without hesitating.
Do you do HVAC too?
Yes. Along with electrical work, we install and repair heating and cooling systems, including ductless mini-splits from brands like Fujitsu. Our Bridgewater office leads our HVAC work.
How much does an electrician cost in New Jersey?
At Spartan Home Pros, the service call is $189.99. It covers checking that power is reaching your home the right way, up to and through your breaker panel. If the problem is past the panel, troubleshooting is added, starting at $239.99. Repairs are priced on their own, like $89.99 for a standard outlet, switch or breaker. Why do you charge for the service call and troubleshooting?

Do you offer financing?
Yes. 0% interest financing is available on qualifying repairs, with a processing fee.
Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?
A breaker trips when it detects something is going wrong. It’s a warning sign, and it’s protecting you from danger. Most of the time the breaker isn’t bad, it’s doing its job. A breaker that keeps tripping is on a circuit that’s being pushed too hard or has a problem. If it keeps tripping, it’s time to call a professional electrician. More on tripping breakers.
Is my breaker bad?
Usually not. The idea of a “bad breaker” comes from the days of fuses, when people changed blown fuses all the time and some put in bigger fuses to keep the power on, which let wires overheat and ruined circuits. Today’s breakers rarely go bad, but the habit of blaming the breaker stuck around. A professional electrician finds out why it’s tripping.
Why are my lights flickering?
If one light flickers, it’s usually a loose bulb, a bulb that doesn’t work with the dimmer, or a worn-out switch. If lights flicker in several rooms, or dim when a big appliance turns on, it can mean loose wiring or a problem with the power coming into your home. That needs an electrician. More on flickering lights.
Why is my outlet not working?
FAQ:
Check three things: a tripped GFCI somewhere nearby, a tripped breaker, or a wall switch that controls that outlet. If none of those bring it back, the outlet or the wiring behind it may be loose or burned. Our service call is $189.99, and replacing a standard outlet is $89.99. More on dead outlets.
Is knob and tube wiring safe?
It isn’t automatically dangerous, but after 80+ years it often has brittle covering, DIY splices, or insulation packed around it, which makes it run hot. Many insurance companies won’t cover homes that still have it. Have an electrician check it, and plan to replace it.
