Because that is how people here talk about it, and the paperwork agrees with them. Aberdeen Township was Matawan Township until November 8, 1977, when residents voted to rename it. The two still share the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District, the Aberdeen-Matawan train station, and — the part that matters for our work — a single construction department under a shared services agreement. Whether your house is in Aberdeen Township or Matawan Borough, the electrical permit is filed and the inspection is scheduled at 1 Aberdeen Square. One office, one inspector, one process. That is genuinely convenient, and it is something contractors from outside the area often get wrong.
Aberdeen is made up of Cliffwood, Cliffwood Beach, Freneau, Oakshades, River Gardens, Strathmore and Woodfield, with Strathmore and Cliffwood Beach large enough to be their own census-designated places. Matawan Borough runs from the older housing around Main Street outward. We work in all of it.
Strathmore homes, and what we find in them
Strathmore is the largest single block of housing in the township and the source of a disproportionate share of our local calls, for reasons that are entirely about when and how it was built rather than anything wrong with the houses.
- A lot of them have no equipment ground. Two-wire branch circuits with ungrounded receptacles were normal when much of Strathmore went up. Somewhere along the way many of those outlets were swapped for three-prong receptacles with nothing behind the third slot, which is worse than the original, because now everything plugged in believes it is grounded. This is the single most common thing we find in these houses. Where running a ground is impractical, GFCI protection with the correct labeling is a code-recognized answer at a fraction of the cost of rewiring.
- Too many rooms on too few circuits. The original circuit layouts were designed for a 1960s household, and they routinely put several bedrooms, a hallway and sometimes a bathroom on one circuit. That was adequate then. It is not adequate for a house with window units, a home office, a space heater in the coldest room and a hair dryer running at 7am. Most of the “my breaker keeps tripping” calls we take from Strathmore are exactly this, and the answer is a new circuit or two rather than anything dramatic.
- Original panels of the wrong era. Housing built in this window is squarely in the years when Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels were being installed across New Jersey. If yours has never been changed, it is worth ten seconds with the panel door open to read the label.
- Aluminum branch wiring in the later phases. Homes wired roughly 1965 to 1973 may have it. It is not automatically a crisis, but it needs the correct connectors at every device, and it is something a buyer’s inspector will flag.
- Additions and finished basements done over the decades, not all of them permitted, and not all of them landed properly at the panel. We open a lot of covers in Strathmore and find circuits nobody can account for.
None of this is a reason to panic about a Strathmore house. They are solid homes. They were simply wired for a different amount of electricity than anybody uses now, and bringing one up to date is usually a panel and a handful of circuits rather than a rewire.
Cliffwood Beach and the streets nearest the bay
Down toward Raritan Bay the problem changes. Salt air corrodes outdoor boxes, meter equipment, service masts and exterior receptacles noticeably faster than it does a mile inland. What we look at in Cliffwood Beach that we would not necessarily look at in Freneau:
- Meter cans and service masts for rust at the seams and at the weatherhead.
- Outdoor receptacles for the right in-use covers and intact gaskets, because a failed cover is what puts water into a box and starts the GFCI tripping every time it rains.
- Panels on exterior walls for corrosion at the bus and the breaker clips.
- Anything at or below grade in homes that took water, where the question is whether the device was replaced properly afterwards or just dried out and re-energized.
We will tell you honestly when a meter can or a panel is far enough gone that patching it is a waste of your money, and when it has plenty of life left.
