How Much Does It Cost to Install an EV Charger at Home in NJ?

Most home Level 2 EV charger installations in New Jersey run about $800 to $2,000, with the price rising if your electrical panel needs an upgrade or the run from the panel to your garage is long. We quote the exact price up front before any work starts.

What affects the cost

  • Distance from the panel. The farther the charger is from your electrical panel, the more wire and labor the job takes — a charger on the far side of a detached garage costs more than one on the wall next to the panel.
  • Panel capacity. A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit. If your panel is full or undersized, you may need a panel upgrade or a smart load-management device to add capacity.
  • Indoor vs. outdoor / hardwired vs. plug-in. Outdoor and hardwired installs can add cost, but hardwiring is often the most reliable choice for higher-power chargers.
  • The charger itself. If you haven’t bought a unit we can recommend one; if you already have a Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint, or similar, we install it.
  • Permit. EV charger installs require a permit and inspection in NJ — we handle both.

Level 1 vs. Level 2 — do you need the faster one?

Level 1 is just a standard wall outlet: slow (a few miles of range per hour) but free to use if you already have an outlet in the garage. Level 2 uses a 240-volt circuit and adds roughly 20–40+ miles of range per hour — enough to fully charge most EVs overnight. For daily drivers, Level 2 is almost always worth it.

Will your panel handle it?

Many older NJ homes have 100-amp service that’s already close to full. Adding a 240-volt EV circuit may mean upgrading to a 200-amp panel, or installing a smart load-management device that lets the charger share capacity safely. We check this during the estimate so there are no surprises.

It is quoted rather than flat-priced, because three things drive it: the distance from your panel to where the car parks, whether the panel has capacity for a 60 amp circuit, and whether the run is open or has to be fished through finished walls. A basement panel on the other side of the garage wall is a very different job from a second-floor panel to a detached garage.

Do I need a Level 2 charger, or is Level 1 enough?

Level 1 on a standard outlet adds roughly 4 to 6 miles of range per hour for an efficient car, and under 3 for an electric truck. If you drive under about 40 miles a day and the car sits overnight, Level 1 genuinely works. Level 2 is the answer for higher mileage, for trucks, for two-EV households, and for anyone with a short window to recover charge.

Will my panel handle an EV charger?

On a 200 amp service, usually. On a 100 amp service, adding a 60 amp charger circuit generally triggers a load calculation, and the outcome is either a service upgrade or a load-management device that throttles the charger when the house is drawing hard. We run the calculation before quoting so the number you get is the real one.

Are there rebates for EV charger installation in New Jersey?

It depends on your utility and the programs change. PSE&G’s off-peak charging credit closed to new enrollments in January 2026, but its make-ready incentives remain, worth up to $1,500 as an on-bill credit per charger. Those require an ENERGY STAR certified smart charger, a New Jersey licensed electrician, and a municipal permit and inspection, so a DIY install disqualifies you.

Which EV chargers do you install?

Hardwired, in almost every case. A receptacle installed for EV charging requires GFCI protection under NEC 625.54, adding a 50 amp two-pole GFCI breaker that a hardwired charger does not need, plus a spec-grade receptacle, since cheap ones overheat under eight hours of near-limit draw. The plug-in route also caps you at 40 amps continuous.
