Not everything electrical is an emergency, and an after-hours call costs more than the same visit at 9am. We would rather tell you that on the phone than send a truck you did not need.

• You smell burning plastic, hot varnish or an acrid electrical smell anywhere in the house
• An outlet, switch, or the panel is scorched, discolored, or warm to the touch
• You see sparks or sparking — at a outlet, a fixture, or inside the panel
• There is buzzing, crackling or humming coming from the panel
• Water is near, on, or inside the panel, or the meter and main power feed are wet or damaged
• Storm, tree or vehicle damage has pulled the service mast, weatherhead or drop away from the house
• Half the house is dim and half unusually bright, or lights surge when appliances cycle — this is a lost neutral wire and it damages electronics fast

During normal business hours our minimum service call is $229.99 and includes one basic repair such as an outlet or switch replacement. A diagnostic visit that needs circuit tracing and testing runs $259.99. Waiting until the morning saves you at least $100, and we will tell you when waiting is the right call.

One thing worth knowing before you call

If the damage is on the utility side — the drop from the pole to your weatherhead, or the meter itself — JCP&L or PSE&G has to de-energize the service before any electrician can legally touch it. Most of Central New Jersey is JCP&L; East Brunswick, Bridgewater and a few others are PSE&G. We will tell you that on the phone rather than charging you for a visit to find it out. When it is our side of the weatherhead, we handle the repair and coordinate the reconnect.

What happens when you call

1. A person answers. Day, night, weekend, holiday.
2. We triage over the phone. Sometimes that means walking you to the panel to shut one circuit off and telling you it can safely hold until morning. That call costs you nothing.
3. You get a flat price before we start. Not an hourly rate that grows while you watch it.
4. We make it safe first, then repair. Isolating a failed circuit and restoring the rest of the house is often the right move at 2am, with the full repair done properly in daylight.
5. Permits where the work requires them. We file the application. The township bills the fee directly to you, because every township charges differently and we are not marking it up.

We encourage the inspection on any major work. It is proof the job was done to code, and we are never shy about it. Be careful with any contractor who would rather not pull the permit.

What we handle on emergency calls

Burning smells and overheated connections

Loose neutral wires, outlets wired the quick way instead of the right way, undersized wires and failing breakers all announce themselves by smell before they announce themselves any other way. We find the connection, not just the room.

Panel and main breaker failures

Main breakers that will not hold, main bar inside the panel damage, and the two panel brands that fail dangerously often in New Jersey housing stock — Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco. If yours is one of those, we will tell you plainly what it means.

Storm, water and service damage

Pulled service masts, damaged weatherheads, wet meter enclosures and flooded panels. In flood-exposed areas — the Raritan and its branches, the Bayshore — relocating a panel to a higher wall is often the right repair rather than replacing it where it sits and waiting for the next storm.

Lost neutral wire and partial power

Half the house dim, half the house bright, bulbs burning out in clusters. This is an open neutral wire, it is not a “flickering lights” problem, and it will keep destroying electronics until it is corrected. It is one of the few faults where calling at midnight genuinely saves you money.

Dead circuits and breakers that will not reset

A breaker that refuses to reset is doing its job. We find the fault behind it rather than replacing the breaker and calling it fixed.

Generator and interlock problems during an outage

Transfer switches that will not transfer, interlock kits, and generators that run but will not carry the house. As an authorized Generac installer we service what we install and plenty that we did not.

• $229.99 — minimum service call in normal business hours, including one basic repair such as an outlet or switch replacement
• $259.99 — normal-hours diagnostic visit needing circuit tracing and testing
• About $89.99 — each additional outlet or switch replaced on the same visit
• Quoted up front — Level 2 and Level 3 troubleshooting, and any repair beyond the initial fix

We charge for diagnosis because finding the fault is the work. What you never get is a bill that grew while nobody was watching the clock.
