Spartan Home Pros is a locally owned and family operated, licensed and insured electrician bringing panel upgrades to Westfield, NJ, from replacing fuse boxes and 60-amp service in pre-war colonials to setting up 200 amps for central air and an EV charger. Call or text (908) 493-9223. Our own crews do every job, real people pick up around the clock, and we file the Town of Westfield permit and handle the inspection. Every panel we install is covered by our Lifetime Craftsmanship Guarantee.
Why Westfield Panels Need Attention

Westfield has some of the oldest homes we work on. Census estimates show roughly three of every four houses in town were built before 1970, and about half went up before the mid-1950s, as Westfield grew into a commuter town around its train station and downtown. The center-hall colonials, Tudors and Victorians on its tree-lined streets have aged well. Their electrical systems usually have not kept up.
Many of these homes started with 60 amps or less, and many were bumped up to 100 amps decades ago. Since then the family added central air, redid the kitchen, finished the third floor and put an office in the basement. The result is often a panel stuffed past capacity, with original wiring from decades ago still feeding a few rooms.
Electric cars are adding pressure. State data counted about 1,600 electric vehicles in Westfield by mid-2025, a number that has been climbing fast. In a house with a detached garage at the back of a deep, narrow lot, getting power from the panel to the charger is part of the plan, and it usually starts with a bigger service. For the charger itself, including runs out to a detached garage, see our EV charger installation in Westfield.
What We See in Westfield Homes
Knob and Tube Still Live
Original wiring from the 1920s and 1930s still turns up in attics and walls. We find it, tell you which rooms it feeds and plan how to replace it. More on knob and tube rewiring.
Fuse Panels
A number of older Westfield houses still run on fuses, or on a fuse box feeding a later breaker panel. See our fuse box replacement page.
Mid-Century Problem Brands
Homes updated in the 1960s and 1970s sometimes got a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel. We replace those outright. Learn why on our Federal Pacific and Zinsco page.
100 Amps for a Modern Family
Central air, an induction range, a heated bathroom floor and a charger rarely fit on 100 amps. A move to 200 amps gives you room.
Close Neighbors and Tight Lots
Houses sit close together, so we plan where the new meter goes around driveways, fences and the house next door.
Panels in Damp Basements
Old basements can be wet. If water has reached your panel, we put the new one higher and out of harm’s way.

Westfield Permits and PSE&G

The Town of Westfield requires an electrical permit and a final inspection for any panel or service upgrade. We prepare and file the application, schedule the inspection and are on site when the inspector comes through.
PSE&G serves Westfield. If your upgrade includes a new meter box or main power line, PSE&G will only set the meter after the town inspector approves the work and issues the cut-in card. We coordinate the inspection and the PSE&G appointment together, so the house is not waiting in the dark between the two.
The inspector requires surge protection on a new panel, and it is already included in every panel price we give, not added later. It guards the furnace, the refrigerator and your electronics from power spikes. Read more about whole-home surge protection. On many service upgrades the house also gets an outdoor emergency shut-off, a labeled switch outside that firefighters can use to cut power before they go in.
How We Run a Westfield Panel Job
- Text a photo first. A clear shot of the open panel door to (908) 493-9223 tells us a lot.
- We inspect the whole system. We open the panel, look for old wiring feeding it and talk through your plans, like a kitchen, central air or a charger.
- Fixed price, in writing. One number that includes the permit, surge protection and inspection. Our cost guide for panel upgrades breaks down the range.
- Upgrade day. Most Westfield upgrades are finished in a day with power restored before we leave.
- Final inspection with the Westfield inspector, plus the PSE&G meter step when needed.

Westfield Panel Upgrade Questions
What does a panel upgrade cost in Westfield?
Usually $2,000 to $7,000. Older Westfield houses that also need meter work, a heavier line from the street or some original wiring replaced sit toward the top. We put the price in writing once the panel is open.
Who issues the permit for a panel upgrade in Westfield?
The Town of Westfield. A panel or service upgrade needs an electrical permit and a final inspection, and we take care of both.
Does PSE&G need to be involved?
When the meter box or main power line is replaced, yes. PSE&G sets the meter after the town approves the inspection. We schedule it so the outage is short.
Can you upgrade the panel if my house still has knob and tube wiring?
Yes. The new panel goes in first, and we can replace the old circuits in stages. We show you which rooms they feed and what should come first.
Is 100 amps enough for my Westfield colonial?
Sometimes, for a smaller home with gas heat and no EV. Once you add central air, a newer kitchen and a charger, 200 amps is usually the right call. We do the math before recommending anything.
Will surge protection cost extra?
No. It is included with every panel we install, since the inspector requires it.
