GFCI Outlet Won’t Reset? What Is Actually Wrong

A GFCI outlet that will not reset is almost always doing its job. In most cases it is holding open because there really is a ground fault on the circuit, there is no power reaching the outlet in the first place, or the device itself has reached end of life. Those three causes cover the large majority of the ones we get called out for, and two of them you can narrow down yourself in about five minutes.

Here is how to tell which one you have, in the order that eliminates the most possibilities fastest.

Start here: does the button click?

Press RESET firmly. What happens next splits the problem cleanly in two.

If the button holds but there is still no power at the outlet, the device has failed or the line and load wires are reversed. If it resets and stays reset only when one appliance is unplugged, that appliance is the fault. Case 1: the button will not stay in and nothing has power

A GFCI cannot reset if there is no power on its line terminals. It is not broken; it is unpowered. Two things to check, in this order:

  • The breaker. Go to the panel. A tripped breaker often does not look obviously tripped — it sits between ON and OFF. Push it firmly all the way to OFF, then back to ON.
  • Another GFCI upstream. This is the one people miss, and it is the single most common reason we get called out for a “dead” outlet. One GFCI protects everything wired downstream of it. Your bathroom outlet may be protected by a GFCI in the garage, in the basement, in an exterior box behind a shrub, or in another bathroom. Walk the house and press RESET on every GFCI you can find, including in the garage and outdoors.

In New Jersey housing stock this pattern is very common in homes built or renovated from the 1990s onward, where a single garage GFCI ends up protecting the outdoor receptacles, the garage, and sometimes a basement run as well.

Case 2: it clicks in, then immediately pops back out

This is the device working correctly. It is detecting current leaking to ground — more than about 5 milliamps — and refusing to hold. Something on that circuit really is faulted.

Unplug everything on the circuit. Everything, including the things you forgot: the garage freezer, the sump pump, the outdoor holiday lights still on the gutter clips, the bathroom night light. Then reset.

  • It resets and holds. Good. Plug items back in one at a time, waiting a minute between each. The one that trips it is your fault.
  • It still will not hold with nothing plugged in. The fault is in the wiring or in one of the outlets downstream, not in an appliance. That is where we come in.

The New Jersey seasonal pattern is worth knowing. The two times a year our phones light up for this are after heavy summer storms and during the first hard freeze. Water finds its way into outdoor boxes with failed gaskets or missing in-use covers, and into garage boxes on the wall shared with the driveway. If yours trips only when it rains, or only after you wash the car, the outdoor receptacle is the first place to look. A weatherproof in-use cover is a cheap part that prevents a recurring problem.

Case 3: it resets, but the outlet is still dead

The button holds, the light is on or off depending on the brand, and nothing works. Two likely causes, and neither is a guessing game worth having:

  • The device has failed internally. GFCIs have a service life. Ten to fifteen years is realistic, and in a damp garage or an outdoor box it can be much less. The internal circuitry can fail in a way that leaves the button feeling normal.
  • Line and load are reversed. If someone wired the incoming feed to the LOAD terminals instead of LINE, the device may reset but will not protect anything and often will not pass power correctly. Modern GFCIs are designed to refuse to reset when miswired this way, which is a good thing, but older ones are not.

The test everyone skips

Press the TEST button on every GFCI in your house once a month. It should trip with an audible click and cut power. Press RESET to restore it.

If TEST does not trip it, the device is dead and it is protecting nothing. That is the failure mode that actually hurts people, because the outlet keeps working normally and you have no reason to suspect anything. An outlet that will not reset is annoying. An outlet that resets but no longer protects is the dangerous one.

One thing worth saying plainly: a GFCI that keeps tripping is not a nuisance to be engineered around. Replacing it with a standard outlet to make the tripping stop is both a code violation and the removal of the thing that was protecting you. If the tripping is genuinely a nuisance rather than a fault, the answer is finding out why, not removing the device.

Why won’t my GFCI outlet reset?

There are three common reasons. Either no power is reaching the outlet, which means a tripped breaker or another GFCI upstream that has tripped; or there is a real ground fault downstream, in which case the button clicks in and pops straight back out; or the device itself has failed, which is usually the case when the button holds but the outlet stays dead.
