Most people meet surge protection the hard way — after a storm takes out a TV, the router and the control board in the furnace on the same afternoon. A whole-house surge protector is fitted at the panel and is the only kind that covers the equipment that is wired in rather than plugged in. Here is how it works and what installing one involves.

What it actually does

A surge is a brief spike in voltage. Lightning is the dramatic version, but most surges are smaller and far more common — utility switching, a transformer issue down the street, or a large appliance in your own house cycling on and off.

A whole-house unit sits at your electrical panel and diverts that spike to ground before it travels out along your circuits. It does not stop the power going out. It stops the spike that often comes with the power coming back on.

A power strip is not the same thing

A plug-in strip protects whatever is plugged into that strip, and only that. It does nothing for your furnace, your air conditioning, your well pump, your oven, your garage door opener or your hardwired smoke alarms — and those are the expensive things with circuit boards in them.

That is the real argument for the panel-mounted unit. The stuff you cannot unplug is the stuff you cannot replace cheaply.

Do I need a whole-house surge protector?

Ask it the practical way: how much of what you own has a circuit board in it, and how much of that is wired in rather than plugged in?

Twenty years ago the answer was a television and a computer, both on plug strips. Today it is the furnace control board, the air conditioning, the heat pump, the well pump, the oven, the microwave, the garage door opener, the hardwired smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, the doorbell transformer, the EV charger, and whatever smart switches and thermostats have gone in along the way. None of that is on a plug strip. Most of it cannot be.

You are a stronger candidate for one if any of these are true:

  • Your power goes out more than once or twice a year.
  • You are on overhead line through heavy tree cover, which describes a lot of Morris, Somerset and western Monmouth.
  • You have a standby generator, so your house switches supply back and forth.
  • You have already replaced a furnace board, a well pump controller or an appliance for no obvious reason.
  • You have just put in an EV charger, a heat pump or a solar system.

Is a whole-house surge protector worth it?

The honest version: it is cheap insurance against an uncommon but expensive event, and it is at its best when it is fitted at the same time as other panel work.

One furnace control board typically costs more than the protector and the install put together. One air conditioning board is in the same range. If it saves a single one of those in ten years, it has paid for itself — and if it never does, you have spent a modest amount once rather than a large amount unexpectedly in August.

Where it is clearly worth doing: if you are already having panel work done, adding surge protection at the same time costs a fraction of what it costs as its own visit, because the panel is already open and the power is already off.

Where it is worth less: an all-electric house with almost nothing electronic in it, on underground supply, that rarely loses power. Even then it is not a bad buy, just a less obvious one.

What it will not do is protect against a direct lightning strike on the house. Nothing at the panel does. It is built for the everyday spikes — utility switching, a transformer issue down the street, power coming back after an outage — which is what actually kills equipment in ordinary houses.

Layered protection is the usual recommendation

The panel unit takes the big hit. Good plug-in strips at the desk and the entertainment center catch what gets through and handle smaller local surges. The two are not alternatives, they work together. If you only do one thing, do the panel.

What the install involves

The unit mounts at or next to your panel and connects onto a dedicated two-pole breaker. On a typical panel with room to spare it is a short job, done in a single visit, with the power off for part of it.

Two things can turn it into a bigger conversation. If your panel is full there may be nowhere to land the breaker. Grounding is the part that decides whether it works

A surge protector works by pushing the spike to ground, so it is only as good as the grounding behind it. In older houses that grounding is sometimes incomplete or has been disturbed by other work over the years. We check it as part of the install. Fitting the unit and ignoring the ground would be selling you a box that cannot do its job.

Do you need a permit

Work inside the panel is permitted work in New Jersey. We file with your township construction office and handle it through inspection and sign-off, the same as any other panel work.

What it costs
