Level 2 EV Charger Installation: What Actually Happens at Your House
Almost every EV charger we install at home is a Level 2. It is the difference between adding a few miles an hour and filling the car overnight. Here is what the job actually involves, what your panel has to be able to handle, and what it costs in New Jersey.
What Level 2 actually means
Level 1 is the cord that came with the car. It plugs into a normal outlet and adds roughly 3 to 5 miles of range an hour. Fine for a plug-in hybrid, painful for anything else.
Level 2 runs on 240 volts — the same kind of supply a dryer or a range uses — and adds somewhere around 25 to 40 miles an hour depending on the charger and the car. Most people plug in at night and never think about it again.
There is no Level 3 for a house. Those are the DC fast chargers you see at highway stops, and they need commercial service.
The panel decides the job
This is the part that surprises people. The charger itself is the easy bit. The real question is whether your electrical panel can carry another 40 or 50 amps on top of everything already running.
Before we quote anything, we work out what the house already draws and what is left. Three things usually come out of that:
- There is room. We add a dedicated circuit and you are done.
- It is close. We can often fit the charger by using a load management device that backs the charger off when the dryer and the oven are both going.

A lot of older Central New Jersey houses are still on 100 amps that were sized before central air, a second fridge and a car in the driveway. It is worth knowing which situation you are in before you buy a charger.
Where the charger goes
Plan this around where you actually park, not where the panel happens to be. Cables are typically 18 to 25 feet, and they need to reach your car’s charge port — which might be front left on one car and rear right on the next.
Things that change the price here: how far the charger is from the panel, whether the run is through a finished wall or an open basement, and whether it has to go outside or into a detached garage. A charger on the wall right behind the panel is a short job. One at the far end of a detached garage is not.
Hardwired or plug-in
Both are normal. Plugging into a 14-50 outlet makes it easy to take the charger with you or swap it out later. Hardwiring is generally the better choice outdoors, for higher power levels, and where you want the tidier install. We will tell you which one fits your setup rather than defaulting to one.
Permits and inspection in New Jersey
Yes, this needs a permit. An EV charger is a new circuit, so it goes through your township construction office and gets inspected on completion. We file the application, meet the inspector and hand you the signed approval when it clears.
Skipping the permit is a bad trade. Unpermitted electrical work becomes your problem at closing, and it can complicate an insurance claim.
What it costs
Most home Level 2 installs land between $1,000 and $2,600. The spread is almost entirely about distance from the panel and whether the panel needs work first. These are guide figures — you get a firm number in writing before anything starts.

What is involved in a Level 2 EV charger installation?
A dedicated 240 volt circuit from your panel to where the car parks, sized per NEC 625.41 at 125 percent of the charger output, the charger mounted and hardwired, a permit filed with your township, and an inspection. The variables are the distance from the panel, whether the run is open or has to be fished through finished walls, and whether the panel has capacity for the new circuit.
How long does a Level 2 charger installation take?
Most are a single day. A short run from a basement panel to the garage wall on the other side of it can be a few hours. A second-floor panel to a detached garage, or a run through finished space, is longer. The inspection is scheduled separately with the township and is usually what sets the completion date.
Will my electrical panel handle an EV charger?
On a 200 amp service, usually yes. On a 100 amp service, adding a 60 amp charger circuit normally triggers a load calculation, and the answer is either a service upgrade or a load-management device that throttles the charger when the rest of the house is drawing hard. Both are legitimate; one is considerably cheaper. We do the calculation before quoting.
Should I hardwire the charger or use a NEMA 14-50 outlet?
We recommend hardwiring. A receptacle installed for EV charging requires GFCI protection under NEC 625.54, which means a 50 amp two-pole GFCI breaker a hardwired charger does not need, plus a spec-grade receptacle, because an EV draws near its limit for eight hours a night and cheap receptacles overheat. Hardwiring is also the only way to get 48 amps, since a plug-in unit is capped at 40 amps continuous.
Do I need a permit for an EV charger in New Jersey?
Yes, and you want one. Beyond it being required, the permit and the signed inspection are the documents your utility asks for if you are claiming a make-ready incentive, and the documents a buyer’s attorney asks about at resale. We file it, meet the inspector and hand you the approval.
