Generator Interlock Kit Installation in New Jersey
Spartan Home Pros installs generator interlock kits and outdoor generator inlets for homeowners across Central New Jersey, so the portable generator you already own can safely run your furnace, refrigerator, sump pump and lights through your own panel. Call or text (908) 287-2187. It is the efficient, budget-friendly alternative to a whole-home standby generator. Our own licensed crews install it, we take care of the town permit and inspection, and the price is agreed in writing before any work begins.
How a Generator Interlock Kit Works

The setup has three parts. Outside, we mount a generator inlet, a weatherproof plug-in box on the wall of the house. Inside, a new breaker in your panel connects that inlet to the rest of the house. On the panel cover, we add the interlock, a sliding metal plate made for your exact panel.
The plate is the safety piece. When the main breaker is on, the plate blocks the generator breaker from turning on. To switch to the generator, you turn the main breaker off, slide the plate over, and only then can the generator breaker go on. The two power sources can never feed the house at the same time.
That matters for two reasons. First, without it, generator power can flow backward out of your house and onto the street wires. A utility worker who thinks a line is dead can be badly hurt or killed. Second, when the grid comes back on, power from the street and power from the generator would collide inside your panel, which can wreck the generator and start a fire. The interlock rules out both mistakes with a simple piece of metal.
Interlock Kit or Whole-Home Standby Generator?
A standby generator is a great system, but it is not the right fit for every home or every budget. For many families, an interlock kit and a portable generator cover what really matters during an outage for a fraction of the cost.
Much Lower Cost
No concrete pad, no gas line and no automatic transfer switch. You use the portable generator you already have, or buy one that fits your needs.
You Pick the Circuits
Because the generator feeds your main panel, you choose what runs: the furnace, the fridge, the sump pump, the internet, a few lights. Turn off what you do not need.
Quick to Install
Most interlock and inlet jobs are done in one visit, often in a few hours, once the permit is in hand.
The Tradeoff
Someone has to be home to roll out the generator, plug it in, flip the breakers and refuel it. A standby unit does all of that on its own, even when you are away.
If you want the house to keep running with nobody there, or you need central air through a long summer outage, read about our whole-home generator installation and our standby generator guide. If you want reliable heat, water and a cold refrigerator without the bigger project, the interlock kit is usually the smarter buy.
What Size Portable Generator Do You Need?

Portable generators are rated in watts. Add up what you want to run, then leave room for the extra burst that motors need for a moment when they start, like the furnace blower, the refrigerator and the sump or well pump.
Many homes can run heat, the refrigerator, a sump or well pump and some lights on a generator in the 7,500 to 10,000 watt range. Central air is usually too much for a portable unit. Before you buy, check that the generator has a large round twist-lock outlet, usually marked 30 amp or 50 amp, because that is what plugs into the inlet. We match the inlet and cord to your generator, and we are happy to look at the model you are considering before you spend the money. Our post on generator sizing walks through how we count the load.
Where the Generator Goes: Carbon Monoxide Safety
Generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide, a gas you cannot see or smell. Never run a generator in a garage, basement, shed or on a porch, even with the door open. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises keeping it at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust pointed away from windows, doors and vents.
We place the inlet so your cord reaches a safe spot in the yard, not the driveway right beside the garage door. Working carbon monoxide alarms on every level and near the bedrooms are your backup, so test them before storm season. If yours are old or missing, we can put in hardwired smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on the same visit.
Permits and Inspection in New Jersey
Adding an inlet, a breaker and an interlock changes your panel, so New Jersey towns treat it as electrical work that needs a permit and a passed inspection. Many construction offices ask for the maker’s paperwork showing the interlock is approved for your panel’s brand and model. Ringwood, for example, asks for those specifications in its portable generator guidelines.
That approval matters. A generic plate or a homemade bracket will fail inspection, and so will a kit made for a different panel. We order the right kit for your panel, file the permit with your township, and meet the inspector. If your panel is too old to take an approved interlock, we explain the choices, including a panel upgrade.
How an Interlock Install Goes
- Send us two photos. Text a picture of your panel label and one of your generator’s outlet panel to (908) 287-2187.
- We confirm the fit. We check that an approved interlock exists for your panel and that the generator’s outlet matches an inlet.
- You get a flat price. One written number for the interlock, inlet, cord, permit and inspection. Nothing is billed by the hour.
- Install day. We mount the inlet where the generator can safely sit, run the wire to the panel, add the breaker and the interlock, and label your circuits.
- Inspection and a walk-through. After the inspector signs off, we show you how to switch over and back until you are comfortable doing it in the dark.

Generator Interlock Kit Questions
What is a generator interlock kit?
It is a sliding metal plate made for your electrical panel that makes it impossible to have the main breaker and the generator breaker on at the same time. Paired with an outdoor inlet, it lets a portable generator power the circuits you choose through your own panel.
Is a generator interlock kit legal in New Jersey?
Yes, when the kit is approved for your panel’s brand and model, installed under a township electrical permit and passed by the inspector. We handle the permit and the inspection.
Is an interlock kit cheaper than a standby generator?
Yes, by a wide margin. There is no concrete pad, gas line or automatic transfer switch, and you can use a portable generator you already own. The tradeoff is that someone has to be home to start and refuel the generator.
What size portable generator should I get?
It depends on what you want to run. Many homes cover heat, the refrigerator, a sump or well pump and some lights with a generator in the 7,500 to 10,000 watt range. Make sure it has a 30-amp or 50-amp twist-lock outlet so it can plug into the inlet.
Can I just plug my generator into a dryer outlet?
No. A cord with plugs on both ends can send power back onto the street wires and injure utility workers, and it can damage your home and the generator. An inlet with an interlock is the safe, legal way to connect.
Can I run the generator in my garage if the door is open?
No. Never run a generator in a garage, basement, shed or on a porch. Keep it at least 20 feet from the house with the exhaust pointed away from windows, doors and vents, and keep working carbon monoxide alarms inside.
How long does an interlock kit installation take?
Most installs are finished in one visit, often in a few hours, once the permit is approved. We come back for the inspection and walk you through switching over.
