Federal Pacific and Zinsco Panel Replacement

Federal Pacific and Zinsco Panel Replacement

If your electrical panel says Federal Pacific, FPE, Stab-Lok, or Zinsco on the door, this page is for you. These panels were installed in millions of homes from the 1950s through the 1980s — including thousands across Central New Jersey — and they have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip when they should. A breaker that does not trip is not protection. It is a panel-shaped fire risk on your wall.

How to know what you have

Open the panel door — just the door, never the cover — and look for the brand name. Federal Pacific panels usually say Federal Pacific Electric or Stab-Lok, often with distinctive red-tipped breaker handles. Zinsco panels say Zinsco or Sylvania-Zinsco, with colorful thin breakers. Why Insurance Companies Care — and Why You Should

Many home insurers now refuse new policies, add surcharges, or demand replacement when a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel shows up on an inspection. Home inspectors flag them on nearly every sale, and buyers use them to negotiate thousands off the price. Replacing the panel before you sell — or before your insurer finds it — turns a known problem into a closed subject, with paperwork to prove it.

What Replacement Involves

We replace the old panel with a modern 100 or 200 amp panel with breakers that trip the way they are supposed to, label every circuit, and add whole-house surge protection where it makes sense. The job includes the permit and the municipal inspection — in New Jersey a panel replacement requires both, and we handle them. Most homes are done in a day, and we schedule around your life, not ours.

What It Costs

Panel replacement runs $2,000 to $7,000 depending on panel size, service condition, and what the inspection turns up behind the old equipment. You get a written flat price before any work begins — never an estimate that grows. If you just want to know what you have and where you stand, our $259.99 service call includes the diagnosis and an honest written answer.
