Federal Pacific and Zinsco Panel Replacement

Spartan Home Pros, a locally owned and family operated electrician and HVAC service company, replaces Federal Pacific, Stab-Lok and Zinsco electrical panels for homeowners across Central New Jersey, swapping a panel known for breakers that fail to shut off for a new one that works the way it should. Call or text (908) 287-2187. Most jobs are done in one day by our own crews, we handle the permit and the town inspection, and you get one flat price before we start. That paperwork is exactly what insurers and home buyers ask to see.

How to know what you have

Open the panel door — just the door, never the cover — and look for the brand name. Federal Pacific panels usually say Federal Pacific Electric or Stab-Lok, often with distinctive red-tipped breaker handles. Zinsco panels say Zinsco or Sylvania-Zinsco, with colorful thin breakers. Not sure? Text us a photo at (908) 287-2187 and we will tell you what you are looking at, no charge.

“…They not only found the issue but showed me a few other problems in my breaker box where the previous electrician from a large, well known company took some shortcuts making it out of code and very dangerous. They were very nice and explained and showed us everything in detail and answered all our questions. …”

Why Insurance Companies Care — and Why You Should

Many home insurers now refuse new policies, add surcharges, or demand replacement when a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel shows up on an inspection. Home inspectors flag them on nearly every sale, and buyers use them to negotiate thousands off the price. Replacing the panel before you sell — or before your insurer finds it — turns a known problem into a closed subject, with paperwork to prove it.

What Replacement Involves

We replace the old panel with a modern 100 or 200 amp panel with breakers that trip the way they are supposed to, label every circuit, and add whole-house surge protection where it makes sense. The job includes the permit and the municipal inspection — in New Jersey a panel replacement requires both, and we handle them. Most homes are done in a day, and we schedule around your life, not ours.

Why So Many New Jersey Homes Have These Panels

Federal Pacific Electric was a New Jersey company, headquartered in Newark, and its Stab-Lok panels went into a huge share of the homes built here from the 1950s into the 1980s. That is why we still find them in split-levels, ranches and colonials across Monmouth, Middlesex, Somerset and Union counties. Zinsco panels turn up in the same era of homes, usually behind a basement door or in a garage. If your house was built in those decades and the panel has never been changed, it is worth a look.

Breakers that feel warm

A breaker or the panel door that is warm to the touch means something inside is working too hard. Do not keep resetting it. Call us and we will check it.

Buzzing or crackling

A steady hum or crackle from the panel is not normal. It often means a loose or worn connection that is heating up.

Scorch marks or a burning smell

Dark marks around a breaker, melted plastic or a hot smell near the panel need attention the same day. Turn off what you can and call us right away.

Lights dim when something turns on

If the lights dip every time the AC, dryer or microwave kicks on, the panel may not be keeping up with what the house needs today.

Getting Ready for Replacement Day

Plan for a day without power

Most swaps take one working day. Keep the fridge and freezer closed, charge phones and laptops the night before, and plan to work from somewhere else if you can.

Tell us about medical equipment

If anyone in the home relies on powered medical equipment, tell us when you book. We plan the shutoff around it.

Open the garage by hand

Garage doors will not open on their own while the power is off. Pull the release cord or park outside the night before.

Clear a path to the panel

Move storage and furniture away from the panel and the outside meter so our crew can get right to work.

What You Have When We Leave

You end the day with a new panel, every circuit labeled so you can find the right breaker in the dark, and whole-home surge protection, which the inspector requires with every new panel. We file the township permit, meet the inspector and set up the power company reconnection with JCP&L or PSE&G. You also get the paperwork your insurance company asks for when they want proof the old Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel is gone.

What It Costs

Panel replacement runs $2,000 to $7,000 depending on panel size, service condition, and what the inspection turns up behind the old equipment. You get flat-rate pricing before any work begins — never an estimate that grows. If you just want to know what you have and where you stand, our $189.99 service call checks your panel and the power coming in, and you get an honest answer.

Charles came today to install an additional outlet in our kitchen. He couldn’t have been more professional. Did a fantastic job. I’m so pleased. He even help us locate our missing newly adopted senior cat. She was upstairs in my closet. Don’t know what we would have done without him today. I can’t say enough about this company. I will always call them for future electrical needs. Best ever.❣️

Spartan Home Pros were fantastic to work with. Mariano took our call and helped us on a Sunday night during what we thought might be an emergency. Al and the team were at our home first thing the next morning to begin work. They were thorough in explaining everything and the work they did came out great. Highly recommend.

I had an outdoor outlet not working and I called late on a Sunday evening. Not only did they answer immediately, they stayed with me on the phone to troubleshoot and make sure there was no danger. They also scheduled a technician to come out first thing Monday. They arrived and did a diagnostic that showed I needed a new outlet installed. The guys did a great job, they were very nice and quick, and the price was great! Thanks!

Mariano came out to help us after we lost power. He answered very quickly and offered reassurance over the phone before he arrived. When he arrived he was extremely professional and helpful. I would definitely recommend this company for future service! In fact we plan to use them for some future projects around the house that we have been planning because our experience was so positive. If you’re looking for a professional, reliable, quick, and compassionate electrician we would definitely recommend Mariano and the whole Spartan team!

Central New Jersey Panel People

Panel upgrades are one of the biggest parts of our work — you can see recent panel jobs with photos on our project map and town pages. We serve Monmouth, Middlesex, Somerset, Union and Morris County from Hazlet, Bridgewater and Chatham, with real people on the phone 24 hours a day. Call or text (908) 287-2187.

Could your panel be the real problem? Tripping breakers, flickering lights, warm outlets and power that cuts out often start at an old, full or recalled electrical panel. A panel upgrade fixes the cause, not just the symptom. Most panel upgrades in New Jersey run $2,000 to $7,000, and we give you a flat price before any work starts.
