Old House Electrical Upgrades in Morris and Essex County
Older homes need a reliable electrician for the little things, like a warm switch or a two-prong outlet, and for the bigger updates when the time comes. We handle both. Spartan Home Pros is a locally owned and family operated, licensed and insured electrician that brings older houses up to date for homeowners across Central New Jersey, Morris and Essex County, from fuse boxes and knob and tube wiring to two-prong outlets. Call or text (908) 287-2187. We pull the permits and handle the inspections, our own crews do every job, and real people answer the phone 24/7. Victorians near Montclair and 1920s colonials in Maplewood are beautiful homes, all wired for a world with three appliances in it.

We work on those houses every week. This page is the short version of everything an older home eventually needs, and what each one actually costs.
The Five Things Old Houses Need
The fuse box. Screw-in fuses mean roughly 60 amps for a house that needs 200. It is the first thing an inspector and an insurer look for. See fuse box replacement and service upgrades.
Knob and tube wiring. Ceramic knobs in the attic and basement, single wires running through the framing. Fine in 1930, prohibited under modern insulation, and the reason many insurers refuse to renew. See knob and tube rewiring.
Aluminum wiring. If the house was built or expanded between about 1965 and 1975, check the sheathing for the word ALUMINUM. Usually fixable at the connections without a rewire. See aluminum wiring repair.
Two-prong outlets. No ground anywhere, and often a previous owner three-prong shortcut hiding the fact. See two prong outlet replacement.
Not enough outlets. The most requested job in every old house, and entirely doable through plaster walls without wrecking them. See adding outlets in older homes.
“Could not be happier with the service we received from Mariano and his team! We bought a 64 year old house that needed lot of maintenance, including a whole new electric panel in the garage. Every technician that has come out has been extremely professional and helpful with any questions we’ve had. …”
Why Older Homes Get Their Own Approach
Old houses punish guessing. The wiring in one room is rarely the wiring in the next, previous owners left surprises in the walls, and plaster does not forgive exploratory holes. We plan the route before opening anything, tell you where an opening has to happen before we make it, and pull the permits and inspections these towns require — which is also exactly the paperwork your insurer or the inspector a buyer sends will ask for.

Start With an Honest Answer
Start with our $189.99 service call, and if we need to look past the panel, troubleshooting starts at $239.99. We tell you what you actually have behind the walls, what is urgent, what can wait years, and what it costs, with flat-rate pricing. Larger work is always flat-rate pricing before anything begins. Licensed and insured, with a lifetime craftsmanship guarantee on everything we install. Call or text 908-287-2187, 24 hours a day.
Could your panel be the real problem? Tripping breakers, flickering lights, warm outlets and power that cuts out often start at an old, full or recalled electrical panel. A panel upgrade fixes the cause, not just the symptom. Most panel upgrades in New Jersey run $2,000 to $7,000, and we give you a flat price before any work starts.
The Upgrades Older Homes Need Most
A bigger service
Many older homes still have 60 or 100 amp service, which struggles with central air, a modern kitchen and an EV.
More outlets
Older rooms often have one or two outlets, which leads to power strips and extension cords. We add outlets where you need them.
Shock protection
Kitchens, baths, laundry rooms and outdoor outlets get the protection today’s code calls for.
Smoke and CO alarms
We bring alarms up to date and connect them so when one sounds, they all do.
Doing It in Stages
You do not have to do everything at once. We walk the house with you, explain what matters most for safety, what matters for how you live, and what can wait. Then we give you a flat price for each step, so you can start with the most important work and come back to the rest when you are ready.

Quick Answers
How do I know if my house needs rewiring?
Warning signs: breakers that trip often, flickering or dimming lights, warm outlets or switch plates, two-prong outlets, a burning smell, or a home over 40 years old that has never been updated. An electrician can inspect it and give you a written quote.
