The Five Things Old Houses Need
The fuse box. Screw-in fuses mean roughly 60 amps for a house that needs 200. It is the first thing an inspector and an insurer look for. See fuse box replacement and service upgrades.
Knob and tube wiring. Ceramic knobs in the attic and basement, single wires running through the framing. Fine in 1930, prohibited under modern insulation, and the reason many insurers refuse to renew. See knob and tube rewiring.
Aluminum wiring. If the house was built or expanded between about 1965 and 1975, check the sheathing for the word ALUMINUM. Usually fixable at the connections without a rewire. See aluminum wiring repair.
Two-prong outlets. No ground anywhere, and often a previous owner three-prong shortcut hiding the fact. See two prong outlet replacement.
Not enough outlets. The most requested job in every old house, and entirely doable through plaster walls without wrecking them. See adding outlets in older homes.

Old houses punish guessing. The wiring in one room is rarely the wiring in the next, previous owners left surprises in the walls, and plaster does not forgive exploratory holes.
