A ceiling fan is heavier than a light fixture and it moves. That is the whole story: it needs a fan-rated box screwed to structure, and the single most common problem we are called to fix is a fan hung on a box never meant to carry one.

Replacing an Existing Fan
Straightforward when the existing box is fan-rated and the switching is already there. We check the box before touching the old fan.
Fan Where Only a Light Was
A light box will not carry a fan. This means a fan-rated box and usually a brace between the joists, done from below where there is no attic access.
Outdoor and Covered-Porch Fans
Damp and wet-rated fans on weatherproof boxes and GFCI-protected circuits. Indoor fans fail quickly outdoors.
Fan Speed and Remote Controls
Wall controls, remotes and smart switches, wired so the fan and light behave separately instead of fighting over one switch leg.
What Decides the Cost of a Fan Installation
A fan swap where the box is already rated and the wiring is in place is a short job. Adding a fan where none existed — new box, brace and switching — is a different price, and we tell you which one you have before we start.
IS THE BOX FAN-RATED
This decides everything. A standard light box is not rated for a moving load, and putting a fan on one is how ceilings end up with holes in them.
ATTIC ACCESS OR NOT
With attic access above, adding a brace is quick. Without it, the brace goes in through the ceiling opening, which takes longer.
CEILING HEIGHT AND SLOPE
High and vaulted ceilings need downrods, sloped-ceiling adapters and more equipment on site.
SWITCHING
One switch leg for both fan and light means either a remote, a smart control, or running a second wire. We explain the options rather than defaulting.
INDOOR OR OUTDOOR RATING
Covered porches need damp-rated fans; exposed locations need wet-rated. Using the wrong one is a warranty problem within a season.

We are a Lutron certified installer, and on the control side we use Lutron and Leviton. Fan brand is your call — we install what you buy.
- Lutron — Fan speed controls and Caseta switching, so the fan and the light operate independently.
- Leviton — Fan controls, smart switches and weatherproof exterior devices for outdoor installations.

Before anything comes down, we confirm whether the existing box is fan-rated and screwed to structure. That determines the job.
BOX AND BRACE
Where needed, a fan-rated box goes in on a brace between joists, installed from above or below depending on access.
MOUNT AND WIRE
Fan assembled, hung, wired and balanced, with the switching set up so light and fan do what you expect.
BALANCE AND TEST
We run it through every speed listening for wobble, and correct the balance before we pack up rather than leaving you to notice it at 2am.

Can you put a ceiling fan where a light is now?
Yes, but not on the existing box. A light box is not rated for a moving load. We install a fan-rated box on a brace between the joists, which is the part that makes the installation safe.
How much does ceiling fan installation cost?

Why does my fan wobble?
Usually an unbalanced blade set or a box that is not solidly fixed to structure. Balancing kits fix the first. If the box moves, that is the real problem and it needs correcting.
Can I use an indoor fan on my covered porch?
No. Covered outdoor locations need a damp-rated fan and exposed ones need wet-rated. Indoor fans corrode and fail quickly outdoors, and it voids the warranty.
My fan and light are on one switch. Can they be separated?
Yes, three ways: a remote, a smart control, or running an additional conductor to the switch. Which makes sense depends on access and what you want the wall to look like.
Do I need a permit for a ceiling fan?
Replacing a fan on an existing rated box generally does not require one. Adding new switching or a new circuit usually does. We tell you which applies before we start.
